Three on / three off is another block pattern with a regular cadence. The length of each shift (8h vs 12h) changes everything — the label alone does not describe workload or recovery time.
Three consecutive long shifts can still accumulate fatigue; three off can feel generous until life admin fills them.

Common sleep problems on this pattern
- Treating each off day like a “holiday wake time” then crashing before the next block.
- Underestimating how much the final shift of three drains attention if sleep was short all week.
Example sleep strategy (framework)
- If nights are included, anchor recovery sleep after the last night before you stack social events.
- Keep a consistent caffeine cutoff relative to your next planned sleep bout, not wall-clock “morning.”
Fatigue risk notes
- Twelve-hour versions concentrate awake time on work days — monitor driving and safety-critical tasks toward shift ends.
- If you stack overtime on day three, you borrow from your first recovery sleep — plan for that.
Recovery tips
- Use day one off for sleep banking and light duties where possible; leave high-intensity training for later off days if you enjoy it.
- Hydration and regular fuel reduce the “everything feels harder” sensation on shift three.
Meal timing tips
- Pre-prepare portable meals for shift two and three when motivation drops.
- Shift hydration upward on hot sites or physical roles — fatigue and dehydration feel similar.
