Health & shift-work desk
Evidence-led writing for shift workers. We cite NHS, WHO, CDC/NIOSH, and occupational sleep medicine sources in each guide and avoid sensational claims.
Common symptoms on nights
Heavy eyelids, slowed thinking, mood irritability, cold sensitivity, and appetite changes are frequent when you work against your circadian nadir. Headaches and GI upset also appear in many night workers — partly from meal timing and hydration patterns.
Performance warning signs
Missing obvious cues, needing repeated reads of the same instruction, or drifting in conversation can precede incidents. Organisations should have fatigue reporting cultures; individuals should not equate admitting sleepiness with being “unprofessional.”
When it may not be “just the shift”
Chest pain, fainting, sudden weight change, persistent low mood, or sleep attacks warrant medical review. ShiftCoach is not a diagnostic tool — it can help you notice patterns to discuss with a clinician.
